Understanding CTC vs. In-Hand Salary in India

When you receive a job offer letter, the headline figure is your Cost to Company (CTC). However, the amount credited to your bank account at the end of each month is your Net Take-Home (In-Hand) Salary.

The difference between CTC and In-Hand Salary comes from two primary statutory categories:

  • Retirement & Social Security (EPF): 12% of your Basic Salary is contributed to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), which accumulates with high tax-free interest for your retirement.
  • Taxes (TDS & Professional Tax): Income Tax calculated as per your chosen tax regime, plus monthly state Professional Tax (typically ₹200/month in Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana, etc.).

New vs. Old Tax Regime Slabs (Budget 2024-2026)

Under the Union Budget 2024 revision of the New Tax Regime (Section 115BAC), tax slabs are structured as follows:

Income Slab (New Regime) Tax Rate
Up to ₹3,00,000 Nil (0%)
₹3,00,001 to ₹7,00,000 5%
₹7,00,001 to ₹10,00,000 10%
₹10,00,001 to ₹12,00,000 15%
₹12,00,001 to ₹15,00,000 20%
Above ₹15,00,000 30%

*Salaried employees receive a flat ₹75,000 Standard Deduction. With Section 87A rebate, annual taxable income up to ₹7,00,000 (total CTC up to ₹7.75 Lakhs) pays zero tax.
